A Conservation Scrapbook

There are probably as many stories about falling in love with Jackson Hole at first sight as there are people living here.  But when the storyÕs about the Craighead twins when they were teens, and the storyteller is one of their sons, itÕs a tale you wonÕt want to miss.

Charlie Craighead will present ÒA Conservation ScrapbookÓ -- never-before-shared stories and slides from the early careers of wildlife advocates Frank and John Craighead -- on Friday, Feb. 9, 6 p.m. at Amangani. Tickets for this unique fundraiser for the Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance are $100, and attendees are asked to reserve early as space is limited.

After growing up in Washington, D.C., the Craighead twins drove West in an old Chevy with several friends in 1934, the summer after graduating high school. Photographing and capturing hawks and falcons along the way, the budding biologists ended up smitten with Jackson Hole, where they visited with naturalists Olaus and Mardy Murie. The twins wrote about the trip in their first of many magazine articles, ÒAdventures with Bird of Prey,Ó for National Geographic in 1937.

Best known for groundbreaking research on grizzly bears in Yellowstone and their work on the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the brothersÕ contributions as wildlife biologists, naturalists and conservationists are unmatched. ÒA Conservation ScrapbookÓ is your unprecedented opportunity to learn about the roots of Frank and John CraigheadÕs incredible careers from FrankÕs son, Charlie.

Tickets are available at the Conservation Alliance office, 685 S. Cache St., or call Lisa Vogelheim at 733-9417 to make a reservation. This presentation, which includes complimentary beverages and hors dÕoeuvres, is made possible by generous contributions from Charlie Craighead, Amangani, DornanÕs Wine Shop, Jackson Hole Wine Company, Plaza Liquor, Sidewinders Wine, Spirits & Ale, The Jackson Whole Grocer and Virginian Liquor Store.
